Problems are mostly small but add up quickly- from tiny QOL things like lack of detailed descriptions of saved games with timestamps etc absence of quick saving, weapon switching system that feels slow, not responsive, and cumbersome through straight-up broken video options that didn't let me set the game in fullscreen, despite trying using many resolutions. As a result, this version feels weirdly lesser and unfinished, not even when comparing with any half-decent source port. Sadly more often than not it feels like devs got stuck between the idea of preserving original experience and feature set and delivering the most impressive version of the game.

Additionally, you get a handful of engine improvements, re-recorded Duke sound (you can enable old, legacy sounds), things like that. There are some caveats like here and there spots that look too barren or areas with a too-small number of interactable items and secrets, but in general it's a lot of fun and level design is varied enough. Two main redeeming features are dev commentary (sometimes uneven and superficial, often too sparse but overall very interesting) and a completely new episode "Alien World Order" featuring eight maps.

And sadly it's the weakest of all three I've managed to get my hands on this platform: original Steam release (app id: 359850) and Megaton Edition (app id: 225140).īoth now unavailable (which in itself deserves negative recommendation), replaced by this port suitable to be released during the first year of Xbox 360 Arcade, not PCs after 20 years since the original release. This is not about the game being good or not, but the quality and robustness of this build. It has Duke, chicks, guns, ugly aliens, and a lot of secrets. Perfectly playable but definitely lesser experience than what you would hope for judging by the game title and compared to previous versions.
